CULTURAL IMMERSION CLASSES AID NEWCOMERS TO AMERICA

‘Changes Through Time’ Offered at MacArthur Museum
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - “Changes Through Time” is a new educational program being offered at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. The goal of the program is to show school-age children, their families and educators what changes the residents of Arkansas have undergone from its time as a territory until the state’s admittance to the union on June 15, 1836 and on to today.
When asked what would be included in the program, Museum Program Assistant Danny Groshong said, “The best part about this program is its versatility. The museum will be starting with ‘Changes Through Time: A Soldier’s Life,’ where we will be talking about the day in the life of an Arkansas soldier- what they wore, what equipment they carried with them, and how these things changed from the Arkansas Territory until today. Our next project, ‘Changes Through Time: Dollars and Sense,’ will focus on the history of currency throughout the state, and why we went from state money to a standardized federal system.”
Stephan McAteer, Executive Director of the MacArthur Museum, said, “We are really excited about this project. It is a great way to learn in a fun and immersive environment.”
The program consists of a short history lesson, where students are taught about the subject material, followed by differing activities dependent on the age group of the children.
“For instance, younger children may color a picture of an Arkansas soldier from a specific time period, while older kids may go on a scavenger hunt for replica uniform pieces, which they will then use to dress a mannequin,” said Groshong. “For our Dollars and Sense program, we may create our own Arkansas money or play a Memory-themed game.”
The MacArthur Museum of Military History is open Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free. Teachers wishing to arrange a visit should contact Danny Groshong at 501-376-4602.
